Inverted Nipples

Inverted nipples are a condition in which the nipples are indented, sunken, or do not protrude like normal nipples. They can occur in both men and women. The main cause of inverted nipples is usually due to milk ducts that are too short or scar tissue around the base of the nipple, which pulls the nipples downward.

Normally, people have about 15-20 milk ducts per nipple/1 side, and the milk ducts cannot be seen with the naked eye. Therefore, we cannot know whether the milk ducts are blocked or not. However, the milk ducts will enlarge and become visible during pregnancy.

How do inverted nipples occur?

Inverted nipples are mostly congenital and can occur in men as well. Some people who are born with inverted nipples may not realize it until they are young adults. There are usually 3 main causes of inverted nipples: having too little space at the base of the nipple, shorter than normal milk ducts that are pulled or retracted, and having scar tissue around the nipples that pulls on them. However, both nipples may have scar tissue or the milk ducts may not pull on them equally, so in some people, only one nipple is inverted, while the other nipple may be normal.

Inverted nipples are usually divided into 3 levels.

Level 1 : The nipple is smooth or partially retracted, but can be pulled out with hands. Sometimes the nipple will protrude on its own if stimulated by touch, sucking, or cold air. The milk ducts are not retraction and the baby can breastfeed.

Level 2 : The nipple retracts but is quite difficult to pull out, or if pulled out, it will only stay in place for a short while and then immediately retracts back in. Some people are able to breastfeed, but some people with contracted milk ducts may not be able to breastfeed.

Level 3 : is the level where the nipple is completely sunken in and cannot be pulled out. Some women have a condition similar to the belly button, with the milk ducts stuck and twisted inside, which may make it impossible to breastfeed. Women with inverted nipples at this level may experience problems with infection inside the nipple hole, itching, and if the nipple hole is not cleaned well enough, the only treatment is surgery.

Can men have inverted nipples?

Inverted nipples in men are caused by scar tissue or tissue that holds the nipple down, causing it to sink inward instead of protruding normally. This can occur from birth or after inflammation or injury.

This surgery is a short procedure, small wound, and does not require a long recovery period. After the procedure, it is recommended to keep the wound clean, avoid strenuous exercise for a while, and follow the doctor’s advice. The results of correcting inverted nipples in men are usually good and permanent, making them look more natural and helping to boost the confidence of those who are concerned about this issue.

Preparation before surgery

Inform the doctor of your medical history, medications, surgical history, drug allergy history, food allergy history (if you have a history of treatment from a hospital, you should bring it with you on the day of the consultation).
Do not smoke or drink any alcoholic beverages for at least 1 week.
Stop taking painkillers and blood thinners before surgery, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, to reduce bruising from blood clots after surgery for at least 1 week. However, if necessary, please inform the staff.
Stop taking vitamins, fish oil, and all types of dietary supplements for at least 1 week.
Remove all metal from the body, such as hair clips, jewelry, nail extensions, earrings, navel rings.

Guidelines for returning home

After 24 hours of surgery, the plaster around the nipple can be removed and the face can be washed without using soap or facial foam in the area with the stitches. Pat dry. Use a cotton swab soaked in saline or boiled water to wipe the area where the wings were cut to remove any blood stains. Then apply a thin layer of Terramycin or Chloramphenicol antiseptic ointment to keep the wound moist, twice a day, morning and evening after bathing.
During the first week after surgery, there may be some bleeding. You can use gauze or tissue to absorb it.
Take the prescribed medication continuously until it runs out. There is no need to buy more medication because the medication you have received is sufficient for treatment.
In case of taking dietary supplements, it is recommended to take them 3-4 weeks after surgery.
Alcohol should be avoided for 1 month after surgery.

However, avoid soaking in water for long periods of time, such as swimming pools, for about 1 month.
